Overview

There is a particular kind of quiet that exists only in a tiger reserve at 5am. The jeep moves slowly, the forest is still dark at the edges, and somewhere in the distance something moves through the dry grass. You hold your breath without meaning to.

That's what Ranthambore does to you.

One of India's most celebrated national parks, Ranthambore sits at the edge of the Aravalli and Vindhya hill ranges in Rajasthan, and it is unlike any wildlife destination in the country. Ancient ruins  including the imposing Ranthambore Fort  rise out of the forest, giving the landscape a quality that feels almost cinematic. Lakes dot the terrain and reflect the sky at golden hour. And tigers, Ranthambore's most famous residents, move through all of it with complete indifference to the awe they inspire.

This is a 3-day, 3-night trip designed to do one thing well: get you into the jungle, repeatedly and unhurriedly. Three safaris across two full days means you go in at dawn, return mid-morning, and go back in again at dusk. You build a rhythm with the forest. The first safari you're scanning every movement. By the third, you've slowed down enough to notice the Brown Fish Owl sitting motionless in a tree, the sambar deer at the waterhole, the langur calling out a warning from the canopy above.

Beyond the tigers and there is a great deal beyond the tigers Ranthambore's biodiversity is genuinely extraordinary. Leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles, blackbuck, nilgai, chital, honey badger, and over 300 species of birds all share this ecosystem. A sighting of any of them is a privilege. The park reminds you of that in a way that cities never do.

For women travelling in a group, a wildlife safari is one of the most naturally equalising experiences there is. Everyone is equally quiet, equally watchful, equally thrilled by the same rustle in the undergrowth. Add a bonfire evening, good food at the resort, and a group of women who are ready to leave their phones and their city selves at the gate, and you have something that feels much more like therapy than a weekend trip.

Things to know before journey

Everything you might want to ask before you book this journey.

Is there a guaranteed tiger sighting on this trip? +

Wildlife is wild, and sightings are never guaranteed that's true of any national park in the world and any honest operator will tell you so. What we can tell you is that Ranthambore has one of the highest tiger densities in India, that our safari routes are planned with experienced naturalists and guides who know the park well, and that three safaris across two days gives you significantly more time inside the forest than most weekend trips. Many of our groups have spotted tigers. And even on safaris where the tiger stays hidden, what you do see the landscape, the birdlife, the other wildlife is worth every early morning.

What is the best time of year to visit Ranthambore? +

The park is open from October to June, and the best months for wildlife sightings are generally February to May when the vegetation is thinner and animals congregate around water sources. January, when this trip is scheduled, is an excellent time the weather is crisp and cool, the light is beautiful in the mornings, and the park is active. Carry warm layers for the dawn safari as it can get cold in an open jeep before the sun is fully up.

What should I wear on the safari? +

Earthy, neutral colours are strongly recommended khaki, olive, beige, brown, grey. Avoid bright colours and whites, which can startle wildlife. Layers work best, especially for the early morning safari when temperatures are low. Comfortable closed-toe shoes, a hat or cap, and sunscreen for the afternoon safari round out the essentials. No camera flash is permitted inside the park at any time.

What kind of vehicle will we be in for the safaris? +

Ranthambore safaris use either a Gypsy (6-seater open jeep) or a Canter (open bus for larger groups). This trip uses jeeps with 6 Flappers per vehicle, which gives you a more intimate and manoeuvrable safari experience compared to a canter. Jeeps can follow trails that canters cannot, which matters when an animal is spotted off the main track.

How early do the morning safaris start and is that really necessary? +

The morning safari starts at 5am and returns by 11am. Yes, it is absolutely necessary and once you're in the forest at that hour with the mist still on the ground and the birds waking up around you, you will understand why immediately. The early hours are when the park is most active, the light is most beautiful, and the tiger is most likely to be moving. Set your alarm, trust the process.

What is the accommodation like? +

You will be staying at Beyond Stay or a similar property a 3.5 star deluxe category resort in the Ranthambore buffer zone. The stay is comfortable, well-appointed, and designed around the jungle experience. Meals are included (all meals except breakfast on Day 1 and lunch on Day 3), and evenings at the resort with a bonfire and your fellow flappers are genuinely one of the highlights of the trip.

How physically demanding is this trip? +

This is one of TFL's most accessible trips in terms of physical activity. The safaris are conducted entirely from inside a jeep there is no trekking, no long walks, and no fitness requirement. The only walking involved is light nature trail walks on the property and exploring around the resort. If you can sit comfortably in an open jeep for 3.5 hours, you can do this trip.
