Overview

Most people have heard of Khajuraho. Very few have actually been. And almost nobody thinks to pair it with a tiger safari and a detour through Orchha  which is exactly what makes this trip worth doing.

This is a six-day journey through central Madhya Pradesh, a part of India that is genuinely undervisited and completely extraordinary. The route moves through four distinct places that feel nothing like each other: Gwalior, with its imposing hilltop fort and the gilded opulence of the Jai Vilas Palace; Panna National Park, one of India's quieter tiger reserves where the jungle feels genuinely wild and unhurried; Khajuraho, where the temples of the UNESCO World Heritage complex rise from the plains with an intricacy and beauty that takes a while to fully absorb; and Orchha, a riverside town where palaces and cenotaphs stand half-forgotten along the Betwa, and the sense of time having slowed down is almost palpable.

Each of these places offers something completely different and yet together they form a trip that has a rare quality of wholeness  nature, history, art, food, and quiet all in one route. Panna gets you up before sunrise and into the jungle. Khajuraho makes you stand in front of a thousand-year-old wall of carved stone and wonder how it was possible. Orchha makes you wander. Gwalior's Sarafa Bazaar makes you eat until you can't.

For women travelling in a group, Madhya Pradesh is one of the most comfortable domestic destinations in India. The pace is unhurried, the distances between places are scenic, and the kind of travel this itinerary encourages  slow, curious, immersive  suits a women-only group beautifully. This is the India that rewards the traveller who pays attention.

Things to know before journey

Everything you might want to ask before you book this journey.

What is the Khajuraho Group of Monuments and why is it significant? +

The Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site consisting of a complex of Hindu and Jain temples built between 950 and 1050 CE during the Chandela dynasty. The temples are renowned for their intricate nagara-style architecture and their extraordinarily detailed sculpted friezes, which depict everything from celestial beings and deities to scenes of daily life and spiritual practice. Only about 20 of the original 85 temples survive, but what remains is among the finest medieval temple architecture in the world. An evening light and sound show at the temples is included in the itinerary.

What is Panna National Park and what can we expect to see? +

Panna National Park sits along the Ken River in Madhya Pradesh and is one of India's Project Tiger reserves. It is known for its tigers, leopards, sloth bears, wolves, and crocodiles, as well as excellent birdwatching over 200 species have been recorded here. The park has a quieter, less crowded atmosphere than more famous reserves like Ranthambore or Kanha, which makes the safari experience feel more intimate. This trip includes two dedicated safari rounds. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but the landscape and biodiversity make every safari worthwhile regardless.

What is Orchha and why is it worth visiting? +

Orchha is a small historic town on the banks of the Betwa River in Madhya Pradesh that most tourists completely overlook which is precisely what makes it special. Built in the 16th and 17th centuries as the capital of the Bundela Rajput kings, it is home to a remarkable fort complex, palaces including the intricately decorated Raja Mahal, the Jehangir Mahal, and the Chaturbhuj Temple, which blends Hindu and Islamic architectural elements in an unusual and beautiful way. The town itself has a meditative quality — quiet lanes, ghats along the river, and a sense that history is still very much present.

What is the Gwalior Fort and is it worth a visit? +

The Gwalior Fort is one of the most imposing hilltop forts in India, with a history spanning over a thousand years and walls that rise dramatically from the rock plateau. The fort complex includes several palaces, temples, and water tanks, and it played a significant role in medieval Indian history including during the Maratha period and the 1857 uprising. The Jai Vilas Palace, also in Gwalior, is the seat of the Scindia family and houses a museum with some extraordinary collection pieces, including a famously elaborate silver dining train that runs around the dining table. The evening food walk at Sarafa Bazaar is a highlight — Gwalior's street food is outstanding.

What is the weather like in Madhya Pradesh in November? +

November is one of the best months to visit central Madhya Pradesh. The monsoon has completely cleared, the air is clean and clear, and temperatures are pleasant days around 22°C to 28°C and cooler evenings around 12°C to 16°C. It is ideal weather for both safaris and temple walks. Carry a light jacket for the early morning safaris when the open jeep can feel cold before the sun is fully up.

How physically demanding is this trip? +

This is a moderately easy trip for most fitness levels. The safaris at Panna are conducted from an open jeep no physical exertion required. The temple visits at Khajuraho and Orchha involve walking on uneven stone surfaces, so comfortable flat shoes are recommended. The Orchha fort complex involves some stair climbing to reach upper levels. There are no strenuous hikes or fitness prerequisites on this itinerary.
